DigiTimes (despite its sketchy track record) is reporting that Apple is lowering it's fourth quarter orders for iPhone and iPad parts, claiming the lower than expected pre-sales for the iPhone 4S as proof.

The Commercial Times report stated that affected suppliers would include cases and camera lens makers, and ODM assemblers. Following up the report though, UBS analyst Maynard Um said that the Commercial Times report of the cutbacks was wrong. Who's right?

Perhaps the most interesting part from the DigiTimes report is that the cutbacks would be due to the low pre-sales of the iPhone 4S, as well as shortages in the supply chain. In case you've been living under a rock, the iPhone 4S has become the best selling iPhone to date, so that hardly seems like a good reason. The alleged cutbacks would affect cases and camera lens makers, and ODM assemblers. It would also force Apple to delay shipments because order wouldn't be fulfilled in time.

    Apple is likely to adjust downward its shipments of iPhones and iPads from related suppliers by 10-15% in the fourth quarter. [...] Some international IC players have also indicated that their revenues are likely to slide by 10-15% in the fourth quarter due to the shipment adjustments for iPhone 4S.

Oh ya, about that, turns out the report, as well as DigiTimes might be wrong after all. UBS analyst Maynard Um says that the report is wrong, citing his checks with suppliers, confirming that the "iPhone 4S is still selling out and experiencing 1-2 week waits for online orders with demand also driven by accelerated carrier/country launches". In other news, Apple sells a lot of products. Shocking right?

So there you go, components parts are still ordered and manufactured as planned. iPad 3 should still release in Q2 while iPhone 5 in Q3. We should expect iPad 2 order cut offs around January if an April release date timeline is to be followed once again.
